This river had been dammed to provide water power to operate cotton gins and other machinery; there were a series of these buildings, known as the Riverside Cotton Mills. Tobacco auction buildings, warehouses, and factories occupied space on many streets near the river. Main Street, running approximately north and south, crossed the river via a covered bridge.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eDanville was the junction point of the Richmond and Danville Railroad from Richmond to Greensboro, N.C., with the Virginia Midland Railway from Lynchburg. These were reorganized as the Southern Railway in 1894. The narrow gauge Danville \u0026amp; New River Railroad, completed to Martinsville in 1881, entered Danville from the West, using a third rail on the Richmond \u0026amp; Danville Railroad's main line from its junction three miles south of the city. The narrow gauge line was reorganized as the Danville \u0026amp; Western Railroad in 1891, and soon after 1900 both became a Southern Railway subsidiary and had its gauge changed to standard.
