D&RG/ D&RGW 4000-Series Boc Outfit Car History
General Car Terminology
General Specifications
The book begins with a history of the outfit cars. The authors have identified over 150 outfit cars based upon various records and photographs and trace the development and reduction of the 4000 series Outfit fleet.
Of particular interest I think are the details provided about the various uses of the cars, as well as data about the overall features such as windows, doors, etc. They also cover some of the consists of the various Wreck and other trains stationed at Gunnison, Salida, Durango, and of course the Alamosa wreck train. Contains some information about some other box outfits (02701, 03679, 3957, 3085 and 3130). Includes a roster listing all known cars including the dates cars were assigned to work service, the type(s) the car was known to be, where they were located on the 1919 ICC inspections, what department or assignments they held and retirement information and dates.
The majority of the book is devoted to detailed drawings of over 60(!) 4000 series cars. Many of these cars do not have published photos available showing all sides and ends, and some have no published photos period. These drawings were based off of on-site visits of existing cars and car bodies, as well as many published and unpublished photos, and they demonstrate a great deal of care in the details. A very few drawings are missing one side or end where no photos could be found to compliment others, but the vast majority are complete down to the last detail. The drawings contain information about window and door sizes, placement, trim, siding sizes, grab iron placement, stack placement, awning information. Each drawing is also accompanied by more detailed text pertaining to the car and it's use and other important details.
