British rail author C. Ellis Hamilton wrote most eloquently, a number of years ago, of his first contact with steam locomotives. He said of that event: It was one of those overpowering experiences of early childhood which survive in memory as a bundle of confused, yet sharp impressions:'

I was born in Roanoke, Virginia, home of the Norfolk & Western Railway.
I had a grandfather who was an N&W engineer, and in later years other family members became involved in various aspects of railroading.
