INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing my book. This is my fifth effort in sharing my railfan activities with others. Southeastern Wyoming and the suburban Denver, Colorado area have been my home for twenty-three years. During those years, I saw many changes in the operation of the local railroads. The high volume of trains at all hours of the day make the area railroads some of the superior train watching locations in the United States. I have spent many hours doing just that. A rare happening is to travel the paralleling roads across Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska and not see a train. Usually, it's much more than just one or two.
When a railfan wants to get close to a train, he needs to be able to do this quickly. Quickness is paramount; the lack of it could mean the loss of a great photograph or a lost photo opportunity. The secondary roads leading to premier photo vantage points are rarely shown on the commonly used highway map, and they may be "no outlet" roads without any warning signs posted.
Topographical maps are very helpful but few are absolutely up-to-date and correct. Road status is constantly changing and they show roads that are either private or recently closed to traffic. Their size and cost also precludes purchasing them for every railfanning venture. (They now cost $6.00-$7.00 each.)
Sixteen topographical maps were required to produce this book: Twelve - 7.5" quadrangle topographical maps plus four other miscellaneous scale maps that cover most of the railroad trackage in the area between Alliance and Crawford over Crawford Hill. They are noted in the Map Reference section on page 57. They can be ordered direct from the United States Geological Survey facilities in Washington, DC or Denver, CO. In addition, there are many maps adapted from the local Chambers of Commerce and the Nebraska State Highway Map.
In preparing this book, I tried to determine what I would like to have had if I had never visited this main line trackage previously. Therefore, my opinions have determined my approach: lots of maps, detailed instructions and some miscellaneous information.
I hope that you enjoy and will make good use of my latest offering.
