Introduction
This book is a little unusual in that, although on a subject definitely historical, it has been written not by an 'eminent historian' but by myself, a practical railway modeller, with some fine drawings and assistance from another modeller and prolific writer Dennis Allenden. We started the book together many years ago when, after a short time, Dennis had a heart attack and died. The work was shelved until the early 1980s when I came across a lot more information and decided to extend the original concept to cover all 'Cramptons' large and small! We were neither of us 'steam' engineers, so will not attempt to analyse relative boiler designs other than to discuss their attributes in relation to models, in fact my own servicing career has been with the internal combustion and gas turbine field.
Dennis Allenden spent most of his time commuting around America in aeroplanes for an American company, with occasional visits to France and the United Kingdom where, through our mutual interest, we met and the book idea explored. The next few years found me sending all kinds of information over the Atlantic to be re-drawn and re-written (I had acquired a copy of Die Crampton Locomotive), while Dennis found the information on the American and the other 'odd ball' Cramptons in the States. During this time he also managed those entertaining articles for Model Railways of the late 1960s and '70s, one of which has been reproduced for the final chapter.
