There's A Two-mile Climb Of Two Hundred Feet South Bound Out Of Cowan And A Five Mile Drop Of Five Hundred Feet Into Tantallon And Sherwood. Just To Make It Real Sporty There's A 140-year-old 2200 Foot Tunnel Right On Top. Life On A Pusher Crew Does Have Its Moments.
(The CPD&T, A Railroad within a Railroad)
A story about one of the very earliest railroad tunnels in the United States, why and how this tunnel was built through a low gap in the Cumberland Mountains near Cowan, Tennessee. We look at it in an effort to see how its being there has contributed to the development of the Central South and the Nation. Thomas E. Bailey describes in wonderful detail how the "pusher" works, and how it has changed over the last one hundred and forty years.
