The Railroading series Volume 2
Call them road diesels, call them cab units, call them covered wagons-by whatever name they were the locomotives that brought about the shift from steam. Road-switchers, although they developed alongside the covered wagons, were accepted more slowly; today's high-horsepower locomotives evolved from both. The time of the covered wagon goes back forty years-less for most railroads. So some of us who saw that time begin are also seeing it end.
My own interest in covered wagons has ebbed and flowed. In the beginning Diesels-you capitalized the word then-were as fascinating to me as steam. You needed no working knowledge of model numbers. Road-switchers were sometimes called "combination switchers" and dynamic brakes "electric brakes."
Later came distractions that tended to keep me away from road diesels, even though I was traveling a good deal. Most of my photographs of them were taken when I had become fixed in one place-after 1960 and near the Erie Lackawanna, a railroad I knew through all of its fifteen and a half years. At length I came to look on its covered wagons as engines whose styling had worn well, and as old friends I would be sorry to lose.
The Erie Lackawanna ran in six states, but the greater part of my photography was done within 40 miles of home, along parts of the railroad known for their scenery. This book, then, is intensive rather than extensive, merely some of what one man saw and remembers.
