The British invented the railway and they have kept it close to their heart ever since. The opening of the Stockton & Darlington
Railway in 1825 launched the great age of the train and for the next century the railway was dominant, its network spreading to many of Britain's towns and villages. Since then the car and the aeroplane have taken over, but the romantic image of the train, all leisurely countryside routes, friendly village stations and elderly steam engines, remains deeply embedded in the national consciousness. The reality of the modern railway is the intercity express and the international Eurostar; so the romance of the railways today is largely associated with the ever popular private and preserved lines. However, the branch line and the country railway do still survive in Britain, essential but little known components of a network that still criss-crosses the landscape to serve many small communities in the corners of Britain.
Country Railways is a nostalgic look at these traditional lines through their often old fashioned and attractive buildings and equipment, and a delightful evocation of the railway's role in the ever-varied landscape of Britain. This enchanting book explores the country railway in all those places where it still survives, from Cornwall to the north of Scotland, from the plains of East Anglia to the rugged Pennines, from the heart of Wales to the seascapes and moorlands of the north country, and from southern England to old centres of industry. Wonderful photography, history and anecdotes combine to make Country Railways a delightful celebration of traditional train travel in Britain.
