PREFACE
Both the degree of change and the rate of change in the railroad motive power field have escalated dramatically since Diesel Spotter's Guide Update was published in 1979- The sharp downsizing of the rosters of most major railroads was accompanied by seismic upheavals in the increasingly unstable new locomotive market. Perhaps the most dramatic development was the January 1988 announcement by General Motors that its La Grange, Illinois, facility would be abandoned as a site of locomotive construction and whatever remained of its new locomotive business would emanate from the London, Ontario, plant - which would fit nicely into the La Grange parking lot. On the other hand- General Electric has come to dominate the field both technologically and in new sales- That those sales are now being made principally to just seven major U. S. railroad systems is another indication of how radical the changes have been since the Update.
This volume is intended to replace and expand upon the Update- It covers the period from 1972, when EMD introduced its Dash 2 line. to December 31. 1988. Included are expanded coverage of contract rebuildings and rebuilders and new coverage of such recent phenomena as large-scale lease turnbacks and massive resales, the virtual disappearance of freight electrification, and illustration of the remarkable proliferation of nuances among models- What the contemporary motive power world lacks in breadth is compensated for by the number and subtlety of variations.
