FOR the purpose of uniting Locomotive Enginemen and Hostlers, elevating their social, moral and intellectual standing, for the protection of their interests and the promotion of their general welfare, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen has been instituted as an international organization; having as one of its aims the desire to cultivate a spirit of harmony between employer and employe. Realizing that our vocation involves ceaseless peril, the necessity of making suitable provision for ourselves, our families and those we feel obliged to aid, against those disasters which almost daily overtake us, and of extending to each other the hand of charity, becomes self-evident, and hence the Brotherhood had adopted as its motto:
