New Jersey, was no small feat for Conrail, and three- or four-man crews were employed in this region long after the union rules regarding train crew size requirements were changed in the late-1970s and early-1980s. In March 1989, Conrail SW8 8686 (a former Lehigh Valley dynamic brake-equipped 'pup') trundles through the maze of trackage in the Bayway area of Linden with all four members of its crew visible.
