The basis for Conrail Commodities is a personal collection of more than 1700 color slides of Conrail operations amassed over a period of ten years, 19841993. The inspiration for all that camera activity was generated during a career in railroad transportation and operations, much of it spent with the New York Central. A brief interlude with Penn Central sufficed to whet an interest in the Pennsylvania property, then came the move to the Long Island. There was no time for photography in the NYC and PC years -- indeed, as my wife will attest, there often was little time for family, either. The picture-taking had to wait until the early '70s when, during vacations from LIRR duty, a black and white record was compiled of Penn Central's Southern Region. That territory was special for me, as I had held an obscure position in Indianapolis in the mid '50s, had met my wife (also an NYC employee) in the office there, and had returned twice, first as terminal superintendent in East St. Louis in 1962 and then as general manager in Indianapolis in 1967.
