A s Conrail entered 1981, progress was made in computer
technology, standardization of motive power, relieving freight car shortages, and other concerns. Trackage reductions, a positive move for the company, were often met with resistance by shippers and labor. New labor agreements were forged with some of the 20-plus organizations representing Conrail workers, but others would drag on foryearssome until the end of Conrail.
The 1981-86 era saw major changes in freight train crew population, caboose elimination, the introduction of end-of-train devices, and "fire-sale" installations of electronic train inspection devices such as hot-box detectors, dragging equipment detectors, high-car detectors, and other state-of-the-art equipment. Line connections and name changes (as well as the renumbering of mileposts) became prominent during the early to mid-'80s. Confusing routes were reduced and simplified where possible. An example was the 1984 change in the line from Ashtabula to Conway. Originally known as the Youngstown Branch, Crab Creek Connection, E&A Secondary, E&A Branch, and Low Grade Secondary Tracks with mileposts ascending from each end toward Youngstown, it was renamed the Youngstown Line with mileposts numerically aligned from Ashtabula to Rochester Tower (near Conway).
