The building of a railway over the coastal mountains behind Cairns a century ago was one of the great engineering feats in Australia in the Colonial days, comparable to the "Zig-Zag" over the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Typically, this is far better known to people in the South than is the construction of the Cairns Range Railway, yet because of its isolation, the latter was actually more remarkable. Without it, Cairns would never have become a city of importance, and its rich hinterland could not have been developed. In the pioneering days, before motor transport, a railway or the lack of it, could make or break a new settlement. This book tells of the hard work of the railway builders, the explorations in search of a route, and of the rivalry between Port Douglas, Cairns, and Innisfail. The people of those times are brought to life in photographs and story in this compelling book. Reading it will make a trip on the Cairns Range Railway more interesting and meaningful.
