INTRODUCTION
We have finally reached a point in this series of books that many of you have been waiting for and that is the St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain Railroad. In this volume we are covering just a little history of the line, mixing in the operations as we go along. The next volume will cover its stations, industries and related topics such as track configurations and the like. The plan booklet will also be available then.
I tried as much as possible to use photos that had not been published before and believe I have succeeded. There was a little space available so a small cross section of motive power and equipment is included plus a complete employees' timetable. Several freight runs are shown in photos with one eastbound double header in steam especially nice.
A very detailed account of a 24-hour period of switching at St. J. in July of 1954 is also included. These are the actual records during a time study in that period and give a minute by minute account of the switchers activities. Other records are also included pertaining to this time study as well as one in December of 1936. Very informative to those of you interested in that phase of railroading.
Since the Maine Central operated the line east of St. Johnsbury to Lunenburg, it too is included in this volume and continues on to Bartlett. The Quebec Division between Quebec Jct. and Lime Ridge, Quebec is also included. The Maine Central portion of this book does include stations, side track diagrams, industries and the like and is as far as I am going with this railroad, except for the industries within the yard limits at St. J. which will be in Volume VIII. I strongly suggest you consider purchasing Maine Central RR, Mountain Div. published by the 470 Railroad Club insofar as the Maine Central is concerned. Excellent photos, as well as its history, traffic and operations and trackage in each town. I can't praise it enough. Their address is located elsewhere in this book.
In the beginning I did agonize on how to put these two books together on the St.J. Quite sure you will be pleased with the results as this one sort of fell into place as I got into it. From the material on hand that will make up the book, I feel certain Part 2 is going to be equally as good.
See you then.
