INTRODUCTION
This volume returns to my usual style of Connecticut River Railroad Books with little script except about operations and then only the freight portion. Space did nowhere near permit me to cover what was my original intent and that was to go to Sherbrooke, Quebec and also include the original Springfield Terminal Railway. Wells River to Sherbrooke will be in the next volume plus other New Hampshire lines in the northern part of the State.
You will find quite a bit pertaining to White River Junction within, and no doubt a book on this alone could well be accomplished with the material I had available to me. But it is not my intent to carry this project on forever, so I have had to draw the line somewhere and eliminate as I go along. If it was 20 years ago maybe things would be different.
I debated on putting Westboro in this volume but finally decided it went with the Connecticut River operations, especially the WRJ area. I have retained a few photos for the Northern Division book but the majority are included here.
You will note that I did go back and redo the complete freight operations north of East Deerfield with some mention of the Ashuelot and Cheshire Branches. I obtained some copies of earlier freight schedules since my Volumes I and II and felt it was in order to do a more complete job. By no means is it complete as I still had quite a few gaps left and nowhere to go to fill them. That, too, could be a book by itself. Let someone else take it from there.
The collection of photos taken from the cab of Trains 75 and 76, I'm certain will be of much more value to my readers than anything I could do on passenger service. As you are probably now aware, I'm not that much of a passenger oriented person even though I have travelled many a mile on head end equipment as a Railway Express messenger before my railroad career. One of my readers, namely John Callahan, mentioned or wrote to me that he had a series from Holyoke to WRJ and return, taken from the cab of an A unit. He was a blessing in disguise and didn't know it. Most of the set is reproduced herein.
Hopefully I haven't made many errors as it is quite easy to do when one has to rely mostly on the information on the rear of the photos. Not passing the buck as once in a while I don't do my homework as much as I should and put both feet into it. A few of you wouldn't have much to do if I didn't goof once in a while. Also, sometimes I am not in error but someone has taken me out of context as I don't always spell it out word by word. I figure you are all astute railroad people or have a good working knowledge of railroading. My books are for enjoyment, not nitpicking. With usually over 700 photos and such per book, it's easy to err and I do! I'm not perfect.
My next one, as I stated earlier, will go further north to Sherbrooke and east/northeast to include as much as possible of the Whitefield, Gorham, Berlin, Groveton, Beecher Falls and Island Pond areas, except we will not include the Maine Central between St. Johnsbury and Fabyan. It will be in the St. J & LC book coming later. Hopefully I can squeeze in all of my intentions. Have fun.
