Lumbering in the south pre-dates the American Revolution, but it was not until shortly before the Civil War that loggers in the pine and cypress regions discovered the flanged wheel on a wood rail as a means of transporting their logs.
This is the warm and sometimes humorous story of one logger and its forebearers that spanned the era of steam railroading in the south. It is the tale of Virginia's Surry Lumber Company and its common carrier ward, the Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railway. The Comp'ny built its empire upon light rail, small locomotives, sweat and determination during the, Reconstruction Era. Over the years the loggers from Dendron daylighted more timberland than any other firm in the state. It died during the depression, scattering narrow gauge equipment to the proverbial four winds.
This then is the birth to the death history of a Southside narrow-gauger, its hard years and good times, its diminutive trains echoing their whistles out of the swampy bottomlands. It is the story of the people who labored in the woods, on the trains and at the mills, written by the man who knew them best. This is The Comp'ny.
