Models and miniatures have held a fascination for man since time immemorial, and examples of small boats and chariots, often made in clay, have survived some 5,000 years from the Cretan, Sumerian and Ancient Egyptian civilizations in evidence. Railways, too, go back further than many people realise, since 2,000 years ago the Romans evolved a form of paved railway system for beast-drawn wagons. Developments of the same basic idea occurred from about 3(X) years ago in, particularly, the mining areas of northeast England, where horse-drawn waggons (two is in these days!) transported coal from mines to ship-loading muddies on the rivers.
Mechanically-propelled models of wheeled vehicles became commercially available in the latter part of the 19th century and over the years grew in sophistication and fidelity to the prototypes on which they were loosely based, but it was not until the 1920s and '30s that huge strides were made in popularity.
Early model railways demanded a considerable amount of space and were a little beyond the financial resources of the average family, especially since the between-war depression affected a majority of people in the developed countries. However, prices were steadily reducing and the introduction of smaller gauges opened the possibilities of layouts in the average home. The wide commercial target was boys and by the late 1930s the average boy had some experience of model trains and many discovered a life-long hobby.
Innovation, increasing technology and the ever-growing sophistication of customers demands have brought us today to a multifaceted international hobby and, inevitably, specialisation into particular areas of interest by its exponents.
This book, with the help of a number of well-known contributors, sets out both to extend that appreciation and outline knowledge to the reader, and to provide more detailed accounts of the areas common to all specialist fields.
