INTRODUCTION
The ignition switch for the beginnings of this atlas was fired several years ago. At Christmas, an aunt knowing I was a railway enthusiast presented me with a book token. I tried to no avail to purchase a comprehensive map of the railway system. On checking with my local library, I found that the main source of information was contained in the very fine British Railways Pre-Grouping Atlas, by W. Philip Conolly.
After studying the publication it crossed my mind that it might be a good idea to take the concept a stage further and compile an atlas to locate all stations and rails built since the beginnings of Stockton and Darlington in 1825, as well as including information from 1923 to the present day. My feelings are that very few new lines and stations will be built in the future unless the government of the day determines a different transport policy to the one in use at present; therefore this atlas may not require much updating in the foreseeable future.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
