DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
When the first volume of Roger Amos's Practical Electronics for Railway Modellers appeared, it broke new ground in the hobby. Coinciding with a general upturn in the awareness of electronics and their application to model railways in particular, it led many enthusiasts to experiment with such techniques for the first time, and so successful was it that a second volume was published in 1985. Now both are superseded by this combined volume, which embodies the best from the previous books, thoroughly revised and updated in the light of recent advances in techniques and components, and much completely new material.
What has made the books so successful is their accessibility to newcomers, for while the average railway modeller is a competent electrician, paradoxically he often finds the subject of electronics totally baffling. However, in this book Roger Amos has been careful to introduce the novice to the subject by means of simple projects, following which he will soon be able to tackle those more advanced. These deal with basic control and detection of trains, through signalling systems of increasing complexity and the automatic operation of the layout, to such additional touches of realism as train lighting and sound effects.
Comprehensive appendices are both practical and theoretical, and the projects - 36 in all - are supported by almost 150 diagrams. The Complete Book of Model Railway Electronics is just that, and like its predecessors will become the essential handbook for anyone interested in the enhancement of layout operation and the remarkable degree of realism that can consequently be achieved.
Roger Amos has spent his life involved in communications of various kinds, as a technical journalist for the Central Office of Information, a minister in the Baptist church, and currently running his own public relations consultancy specialising in the publicity needs of high-technology industries. As well as the two books already mentioned, he collaborated with Martin Cock on Computer Projects for Railway Modellers, also published by PSL.
