Introduction
Organized service use of heavier-than-air flying machines began in 1911. For some of the infant service air arms, the baptism of fire was to come over the battlefields of Europe four years later. The first armed and specifically military flying machines followed rapidly, in early 1915. During World War I military aviation flourished. Military aircraft progressed more rapidly in terms of speed, power, range, load-carrying and mission diversity during this period than at any subsequent time.
From 1919 to the early 1930s, military aviation and the development of military aircraft stagnated as governments worldwide sought to minimize their outlay on defense. However, these were the years in which, to provide local air cover, the world's leading navies turned to the aircraft carrier.
