INTRODUCTION
This is my second effort in sharing my railfan activities with others. Parker, Colorado has been my home for eleven years. During those years, I saw many changes in railroading on the Joint Line. The high volume of trains at all hours of the day makes it one of the superior train watching locations in the United States. I have spent many hours doing just that. A rare happening is to travel Interstate 25 or the paralleling secondary roads between Denver and Pueblo and not see a train.
When a railfan wants to get close to a train, he needs to be able to do this quickly. Quickness is paramount; the lack of it could mean the loss of a great photograph or a lost photo opportunity. The secondary roads leading to premier photo vantage points are rarely shown on the commonly used highway map. Topographical maps are very helpful but few are absolutely up-to-date and correct. Road status is constantly changing and they show roads that are either private or recently closed to traffic. Their size and cost also precludes purchasing them for every railfanning venture.
There are twenty-two 7.5 quadrangle topographical maps plus four other miscellaneous maps that cover all of the railroad trackage in the Joint Line area. They are noted in the Map Reference section on page 29. They can be ordered direct from the United States Geological Survey facilities in either Washington, DC or Denver, CO.
In preparing this book, I tried to determine what I would like to have had if I had never visited the Joint Line previously. Therefore, my opinions have determined my approach: lots of maps, detailed instructions and some miscellaneous information.
