Few railroads have as rich a past as The Colorado and Southern system. F. Hol Wagner, Jr. tells it all: from pioneer days, when narrow gauge roils were first thrust into the Rockies, through post-World War II dieselization to present day Burlington Northern.
The C&S system has always been in a state of transition, embracing new technology and services necessary for growth or survival. Because geography or economics sometimes prevented these changes from taking place overnight, the C&S system was subject to fascinating anachronisms. Diesels, when there were still relatively few in the notion, could be found pulling the Texas Zephyr while steam locomotives built in the last century plied high country spurs.
As the steam locomotives and narrow gauge operations of an earlier era make interesting reading today, so will today's modern computers and high-horsepower diesels seem quaint to future historians, and provide subjects for new chapters of progress on "The Colorado Road."
