Narrow gauge in North Mexico, Otto Perry, Train Time in Ouray
In this, our eleventh year of publication, we take pleasure in offering our readers a varied consist of western and narrow gauge railroad history and nostalgia. Our subject matter covers three areas - the recently abandoned Chihuahua Mineral Railway, the photography of the late Otto Perry, and the onetime Ouray Branch of the Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge.
The Chihuahua Mineral began operations at the turn of the century, but much of its early history has been lost in the confusion of Mexican revolutionary times. In later years it was happily discovered by railfans, as it became a lingering holdout of narrow gauge steam operation, retaining some of the aura that reminded one of early western narrow gauge operation in the United States.
Dick Kindig has undertaken a biographical sketch of one of Colorado's most famous pioneer railroad photographers - the late Otto Perry. Otto was known to many, and many rail-fans all over the country count Perry prints as prized possessions in their rail photo collections, thanks to Otto's generosity in making prints available to all who were interested.
Our Associate Editor, Gordon Chappell, has diligently researched and prepared a detailed article on a small but colorful segment of the Denver & Rio Grande's one-time narrow gauge network, and key part of the original famed "Around the Circle" Tours -the Ouray Branch. The objective of the line, Ouray, nestled deep in the northern flanks of the San Juan Mountains, must be ranked as one of the most picturesque and attractive of all the Colorado mountain towns, and the little railroad was as colorful in its own way.
