1973-77 Chevrolet Corvette: Suspended Animation
By the early Seventies, the Chevrolet Corvette was solidly established as "America's sports car." Then a series of intriguing show cars led some to believe the 'Vette was about to join the ranks of the world-class exotics. As Ray Thursby points out, breathless magazine covers were one thing; reality was another.

1955-57 Hudson: Disappearing Act
Like an aging prize-fighter taking on one hungry contender too many, Hudson was staggering under a one-two punch in 1954. The compact Jet, which cost a lot of dwindling corporate capital to develop, was a marketplace flop. Meanwhile, a Ford-Chevrolet price war in pursuit of sales supremacy was straining the fragile finances of the independent automakers. Rather than throw in the towel, Hudson put itself in Nash's corner in hopes of answering the bell for 1955 and beyond. Patrick R. Foster tells the story.

Bucket-Seat Beauty: The 1962-64 Dodge Polara 500
The start of the Sixties saw several new types of cars sprouting up in America as Detroit began fine-tuning its marketing. Aside from compacts, there were also "personal-luxury" cars and high-performance specials built to a formula that included V-8 engines, unique trim, and bucket seats. Jeffrey Godshall reports that when Dodge mixed these ingredients, it cooked up the Polara 500.

Gale Halderman: Mustangs, Marks, and More
Though he thought he was headed to the Lincoln-Mercury styling studio when he was hired at Ford in 1954, Gale Halderman didn't get there until 1968. But when he did arrive, it was as studio director. In the conclusion of a two-part interview with Jim Farrell, Halderman recalls some memorable Lincolns.
