Colin Garratt Railway Photographer A portfolio of his finest work and a worldwide testament to the steam locomotive Dust Jacket 1982 168 Pages
At the age of nine he used to cycle over to this bridge, 'spotting' the many and varied steam locomotives that passed in those pre-diesel days.
So far, the story of one typical small boy pursuing the transient enthusiasms of youth.
But Colin was different. His enthusiasm didn't fade. By the time he was 16 he had notes and a thousand vivid memories of trips the length and breadth of the country. And in his pursuit he had become aware of the history, development and world-wide spread of British-pioneered steam.
Then, as government policy decreed the extinction of these most powerfully dramatic symbols of the Industrial Revolution, he made a decision.
Someone would have to record their passing, not just in this country but throughout the world. Someone would have to record them with the eye, the
skill and the dedication of the artist, not just for those who remembered them but for those who would never have the chance to see, hear and smell working steam in all its varied moods and settings.
That someone would have to be him. This was not a job to be left to chance, to the hope that someone else would do it. So, with a single-minded determination he set to work to master the art of photography. Drawing his inspiration from the painters he most admires -
Turner, the Impressionists, Constable- he knew that underlying the artistic vision is a daunting range of technical skills.
Since then life has been a race against time for steam is dying. All over the world the last survivors are making their last runs. The mournful lines of locomotives, cold, inert and rusting, wait to be cut to pieces by the breaker's torch. But, from Peru to Java, from southern Africa to India, Colin Garratt has tracked them down, catching them as they pass, recording their final fiery moments for all time.
Now the wheel has come full circle. He lives only a few hundred yards from the Victorian bridge where it all started for him. Lives there, that is, when he isn't travelling, lecturing, recording, all in pursuit of that vow he made over twenty years ago.
