The Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway, commonly known as the Cog Road, has been carrying people to the summit of Pike's Peak in comfort and safety since 1891. It has the distinction of reaching the highest elevation above sea level of any rack railway in the world ( 14,110 feet), and its length of 8.9 miles is exceeded by only one, in Switzerland.
Although Pike's Peak is not as high as a number of other mountains in Colorado, it is fortunately situated near the plains instead of being surrounded by other peaks. Because of this there are remarkable views in all directions from its summit, including downward.
