While much attention has been lavished on the big, major players in rail transportation, such as the PRR, NYC and UP to mention just a few, the smaller, regional carriers also provided a sizeable portion to the overall success of American Railroading.
This color guide illustrates for we the historians, we the modelers, as well as we the casual readers, rolling stock of two smaller roads in the Middle Atlantic region, the Jersey Central and the Lehigh Valley.
Image conscious, as is most of American commerce, the Jersey Central and Lehigh Valley rostered colorful rolling stock in their later years.
Join us now, for a review of the rainbow of colors that appeared on these two roads as we bring you the CNJ/LV Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment.
Most railroads are recognized by their insignias: PRR for the keystone, NYC for the oval and UP for the shield. Any award for THE most patriotic insignia in American railroading has to go to the CNJ whose silhouette of Miss Liberty graced their rolling stock for decades. Likewise the Lehigh Valley black diamond illustrates the vast amount of traffic in that commodity, that made this neighboring road rich at the turn of the century.
Passenger operations might be compared to black and white. CNJ was in large part a commuter operation, some of whose lines survive into the nineties as part of New Jersey Transit. However, no mention of CNJ passenger service would be complete without noting the BLUE COMET. The LV, with its ASA PACKER, JOHN WILKES and BLACK DIAMOND was a longer haul operation and their passenger services ceased on Feb. 8, 1961. The fine trains of both these roads have been well documented in print over the years and need not be repeated here as our color guides in this series deal with equipment as compared to operations.
Like other railroads whose roots trace back to the golden age of railroading, both roads had their passenger colors; Pullman Green for the CNJ, later blue and yellow in hopes of a merger with B&O which fell through in the early seventies, and Cornell red for the LV. For their premier trains, understandably, they wanted something a bit flashier. The CNJ turned to Packard Blue for the sides of the BLUE COMET with a Jersey Cream window band. The roofs and ends were done in dark blue representing sea, sand, and sky. The LV dressed up the JOHN WILKES and the BLACK DIAMOND in Cornell Red and black with white stripes.
During re-equipping of the CNJ commuter operations in the early 1970's, after the State of New Jersey became financially involved, the line became a riot of color. Dark blue was accented with a yellow letterboard, but was not consistent. Cars that came from other roads operated for a while in their native colors. In cases, the original road name was neatly painted out and replaced by CNJ. Stainless steel cars also appeared during this period of transition from standard to lightweight equipment.
