Sample Text - Junction in the Desert
TIMBER . . . timber, timber, timber! A cry of desperation penetrated the air of a barren desert. Answering echoes of promise reverberated from forest-crowned mountains nearby.
In the central southeastern area of New Mexico Charles Bishop Eddy was constructing the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad' and needed cross-ties for his track. Timber in the majestic Sacramento Mountains was close at hand and could resolve his difficulty. but it was practically inaccessible. A railway into the mountains was necessary to transport logs to the main line.
Cognizant also of the enormous quantity of excellent timber in the Sacramento Mountains, Eddy could not close his eyes to the possibility of profit from other uses for lumber. The mines in New Mexico and Arizona needed timbers for their shafts and the demand for lumber was rapidly increasing in El Paso, Texas.
