In 1869 the east and west coasts of the USA were at last linked by rail, launching what is now known as "the
golden age of the railroad." Within twenty years several other major transcontinental routes had been opened,
and the railroad companies, which had invested countless millions of dollars, needed to attract both freight and
passengers. From then on a crossing to the Pacific by train, over wide plains, high deserts, and the rugged heights
of mountain ranges, was one of the most exciting adventures that any traveler could imagine.
To celebrate these pioneering routes, the railroad companies, enterprising publishers, and even the United States
Geological Service, produced a large quantity of colorful literature, including souvenir books, foldout postcards,
and illustrated maps. This exciting volume, packed with rare railroadiana and expertly-written text,
brings those wonderful days back to life!
This volume covers
The Union Pacific/Central Pacific Overland Route from Omaha to San Francisco
The Southern Pacific "Sunset Route" from New Orleans to Los Angeles
The Northern Pacific Route from St. Paul to Seattle
The Santa Fe Route from Kansas City to Los Angeles
The Denver and Rio Grande "Royal Gorge Route" from Denver to Salt Lake City
The Shasta Route and Coast Line from Seattle to Los Angeles
The Canadian Pacific Route from Calgary to Vancouver
