This sumptuously illustrated book has been created by Colin Garratt, one of the world's leading railway photographers, to show the rich and fascinating diversity of steam locomotives around the world in their declining years.
The steam locomotive is one of the most animated of all man's creations; its appearance at the dawn of the 19th century added an impetus to the Industrial Revolution which was destined to change the face of the world and to lay the foundations of the technological age in which we now live.
The steam locomotive's role as the primary form of land transport spanned more than a century, while its total working life is expected to exceed two centuries. Over the course of locomotive history, tens of thousands of different locomotive designs have emerged.
Some 65,000 steam locomotives are known to have existed, although less than 4,000 remain active in commercial service. The majority of these are to be found in China, but the sugar plantations of Java, Cuba and India still use an amazing variety of multicolored locomotives, some over 100 years old. Isolated pockets of steam engine use can be found in a number of other countries augmented by many derelict engines which, thus far, have escaped the scrap heap.
This book reveals the beauty and magic of the steam train. The wonderful pictures found in these pages will continue to be treasured long after the steam age is over.
