THE OLD BLACK SATCHEL
Extending from Monroe, North Carolina, in the Piedmont, to Rutherfordton, North Carolina, near the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountain range, the Seaboard Air Line's Charlotte Subdivision was an important artery for rail traffic after 1887, when the line was completed to its western terminus.
It had taken a long time to realize the completion of the line. Plans for the road were being made before the Civil War, when the Wilmington and Charlotte Railroad was issued a charter on February 3, 1855, with authority to build a standard gauge railroad from Wilmington, NC, to Rutherfordton, NC, to be funded by gold bonds in the amount of one million, six hundred thousand dollars.
On November 14th of the same year, a special act of the North Carolina Legislture named the Wilmington, Charlotte, and Rutherfordton Railroad as a successor to the charter and all rights of the Wilmington and Charlotte, with further construction authorized to a western terminus in Asheville, NC. Periodically over a period of years additional bonds were authorized to pay for construction as it developed. Credits and redemptions on existing bonds were made in such a manner as to make the actual cost of the project almost impossible to determine.
Most of the counties through which the line would traverse subscribed to capital stock, including Rutherford County, which wound up being the end of the line.
