INTRODUCTION
This book covers the 50 ft. plus house cars that replaced the 40 ft. ice cars, as the industry and market place changed. In 1945, Florida began the production of frozen orange juice, thus changing the buying habits of Americans. As home ice boxes were replaced by electric-powered refrigerators so also were ice and salt cooled house cars replaced by mechanically cooled refrigerator cars, as frozen juice and foods needed constant low temperatures. The growing areas of Florida, California and Arizona needed their perishable products to arrive in good condition. Mechanical refrigerator cars were capable of maintaining temperatures from -10to 70depending on the type of food products carried or time of year. The RB and RBL type insulated cars increased the mix of products that could be carried to include can goods, lumber and industrial products.
