PREFACE
In this fifth volume of the on-going series of freight equipment, let us get off the main line for a while and look at non-revenue work cars that were, for the most part, converted from old and/or retired freight vehicles. Some are specialized for a specific purpose and we will try to give you an overview of the types and purpose of these behindthe-scenes, but essential cars in this sampler. As stated so succinctly in volume one: "any attempt to be comprehensive...would require a work the size of an encyclopedia..." Therefore, let's journey now through the railroads of the eastern portion of the United States and experience, in general, how these lines were cared for, supplied and maintained.
