PREFACE

This is the first in a series of color photographic reviews on the American freight car. This first volume covers the wood sided, wood outside braced and all steel 40 ft. box cars, the so called classic forty footers. Since no car is exactly forty ft. long, we will consider all cars in the 35 to 45 foot range as forty footers, therefore anything within that span will come under the purview of this work. The next volume will cover another type of forty ft. car and subsequent volumes will cover other forty footers as well as cars fifty ft. and longer. Since the forty footers tend as a group to predate the fifty footers the cars in this survey will tend to be older and less colorful than the cars constructed from the sixties onward. This is intended to be a sampler of some varied and interesting cars that can be modeled. Any attempt to be comprehensive or definitive would require a work the size of an encyclopedia with a price
