DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
When railways first made their mark on an infant America in the 1820s, many viewed the newfangled mode of transportation with great skepticism. Could anything be better than canal transport or even horse-and wagon? By the end of the century, though, railways had transformed North American transportation to an extent that had been previously unimaginable.
In 1900, seemingly countless railroad companies linked virtually every village, town, and city in North America. With the inevitable consolidation of these numerous fledgling carriers into new or larger companies, there arose a network of railroads that, for the better part of the twentieth century, became "standard bearers" in transportation history-the "classics," if you will.
Author Mike Schafer documented many of these famous-and some not so-famous, but nonetheless fascinating-railways in Classic American Railroads and More Classic American Railroads. Now this third volume in the series offers another tour along the lines of storied carriers, such as the "Frisco," Monon, Soo Line, Reading Lines, and the Lackawanna. For the first time, the series ventures past the United States for a look at Canadian railroading and its amazing transcontinental system, the Canadian National Railway.
Classic American Railroads III also examines several smaller systems. Though a far cry from big players like the Santa Fe and the Pennsylvania in terms of length and breadth, these more modest companies, such as the Clinchfield, the Missabe Road, and Maine Central, all have their own stories that reveal their key roles in making North America a world railroad leader.
So, turn off the television, sit back, and travel through these 156 pages and over 200 color and black-and-white photographs of railroad history. It's a colorful and entertaining trip. Don't miss the train(s)!
