SUMMARY
Not so long ago, the phrase "urban renewal" hung like an ominous cloud over aging structures, public and private. The last two or three decades of the twentieth century saw apathy on the part of the public and elected officials turn into action and involvement, and phrases like "adaptive reuse" began to replace "demolition" in the urban planners' lexicon.
Because they typically occupied prime, underutilized real estate, urban railroad stations were-and remain-particularly vulnerable. Because numerous passenger trains had vanished, these classic terminals were considered expendable and were demolished throughout North America.
The 1963 destruction of New York City's Pennsylvania Station was a watershed event, raising the ire of broad segments of society. It led to the establishment of preservation legislation, so that such an event would not happen again without due process.
Beginning in the 1970s, interested parties throughout North America looked upon surviving classic railroad terminals in a new light. Some, no longer serving trains of any description, were given new leases on life as museums, science centers, or shopping and dining arcades. Others were able to rebound as important transportation centers, often serving bus and subway passengers as well. A few still survive in limbo-facing uncertain futures in unfriendly surroundings.
Classic American Railroad Terminals, with 156 pages and over 200 spectacular color and black-and-white photographs, is the story of North America's great stations over the past 125 years. The individual histories of over 50 terminals from across the United States and Canada are presented against the rich backdrop of evolving architectural styles and the passenger trains they served. Whether you remember visiting these landmarks or just wish you had, Classic American Railroad Terminals not only takes you back to the heyday of rail passenger travel in North America but celebrates the new-found admiration for these long-neglected treasures.
