This pictorial work presents capsule histories of a selected group of forty railroad stations all located in the United States. Many of the stations presented have historically related backgrounds and have been placed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. With respect to their architecture, importance to the communities in which they exist or had existed, and their significant styles of railroad station architecture, these stations may be considered as classic designs that developed since the evolution of the railway system in America. In most cases, too, the stations presented are unique in their architecture, in comparison with many others found on most railroads that are of standard designs or have variations of standard designs.
One purpose of this work is to present a reasonable variety of such stations based on available data and to note the more important and interesting architectural features of these buildings that range from small to moderate size. The selection is also based upon the interesting backgrounds these buildings often have, either historically or otherwise, and for their importance to their local communities.
Many of the stations presented still exist and are in varying stages of aging and disrepair. Many others have been fully restored and are again being used, thus retaining an important facet of railroad station architecture while maintaining a functional and useful service. In some few cases the stations no longer exist but have been recorded here for future reference as a representation of their past service and importance to railroad station designs that once existed, with some measure of significance, to their communities.
Where possible, there is photographic representation of these stations -to show both their past and more recent states of existence. Many of the older-period photographs show fascinating glimpses of life in the past. There are well over 200 illustrations, some in color.
Fortunately, many of these stations continue to exist and those that are preserved and restored provide some very fine examples of railroad station architecture for future generations to see firsthand. As the significance of earlier railroad station architecture in America gradually becomes more apparent, an appreciation for their distinctive designs and craftsmanship is retained and cherished.
