AUTHORS NOTE:
The branch line from Kemble to Cirencester, opened in 1841 and closed in 1965, was from 1959 to 1964 the subject of an experiment in low-cost modernisation, which was overtaken by a political climate hostile to railways. It was after looking at this critical period in detail that I decided to research the history of the line.
I am particularly grateful for the expert guidance and enthusiasm of Larry Crosier of the Signalling Record Society, and John Thomas of Cirencester Railway Society. Also very helpful at crucial stages were John Nicholas, who gave me a conducted tour of present-day remains of the route; Frank Deakins, who worked at Cirencester Town in the early part of his railway career; Ian Nulty, Records Manager, Railtrack Great Western; and Mr. J. Worthy of Brunel University, who assisted my research in the C.R. Clinker Collection.
Special thanks are due to Mr. David Viner, Curator of the Corinium Museum, and Mr. Paul Elkin, Curator of Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery, who helped me locate useful photographs. I would also like to thank Chris Leigh, Editor of Steam World, who is a respected authority on the railbus venture, Ross Grover, who drew the maps, and Tim Bryan, Curator of Swindon Railway Museum.
I appreciate the assistance I received from L. Beard, A.G. Biggs, B.W. Carter, C.H. Comerford, M.E. Hatch, N. Irvine, R.J.M. Keylock, K. Mulraney, D.J. Payne, D.J. Rees W.J. Roberts, P. Strong, G. Westmacott, C.F.D. Whetmath; staff at Cheltenham, Cirencester, Gloucester and Swindon public libraries; Gloucestershire County Record Office, Brunel University and the Public Record Office.
