To the casual "railfan," this publication will be of only nominal interest, but to the dedicated railway transportation buff and historian, as well as the serious model railroader, this first of three volumes on the engineering and architectural standards of the Santa Fe Railway will be a welcome addition to the library as well as a source of academic pleasure provided by perusal of the data contained herein. The Santa Fe is highly regarded in the railroad world as a model of operating and financial efficiency. Lesser known is the fact that it, too, was a very professional "standard" railway whose designs were based on the best operating and engineering knowledge. The standard designs presented here relate primarily to buildings, trackside facilities, roadbed and roadway, track, bridges, and similar appurtenances commonly seen but not so commonly recognized and understood. Standards in any line of endeavor have a way of improving and upgrading as time passes, and railway standards are no different. That's why notations of revision are made along with the revisions themselves. In preparing this three-volume series, the publishers have not attempted to present every standard - only select ones that reflect the character of the railroad itself and ones that, hopefully, will provide inspiration and background to those who model this old friend - the Santa Fe Railway.
