Chicago's Passenger Trains By Robert Olmsted A gallery of portraits 1956-1981
Chicagos Passenger Trains By Robert Olmsted

This volume is concerned with portraits of the railroad-owned and operated passenger train in its final fifteen years, plus Amtrak's first decade. Those momentous years when the promise of the '50's turned into the disaster of the '60's, followed by Amtrak's uphill struggle back toward respectability. The setting is the rail capital of the U.S.-Chicago. Come along as the finest from EMD and Alco, from Budd and Pullman-Standard, emerge from the depths of Chicago's rail cathedrals and set sail for all corners of the land. Domes and diners, berths and bedrooms, coaches and parlors, E's, F's, (and a few PA's), all clicking off their last grand miles until there were none (almost). Then as the '70's rolled by, a new hope of red, blue and platinum mist, of Superliners, Amfleet and Heritage. In 1982 the Amtrak issue as usual is in doubt, and the "caution" aspect is displayed, but at least there is hope.
