In the summer of 1970, I had graduated from college (Washington & Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia), and was planning to further my education in graduate school. I'd always wanted to work in the transportation industry, and had an interest in both railroads and airlines, although the latter seemed to have better long-term career prospects at that point, especially in the aftermath of the bankruptcy of Penn Central. This notable event occurred not long after my college graduation, in June of that year, and just prior to beginning employment (as part-time "summer help") in the industry, with TWA at New York's JFK airport.
The ideal place to further my educational goals w Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, which had excellent interdepartmental program for a Masters Degree Transportation. Evanston is adjacent to Chicago... the rail capital of the U.S. Surely, there would be some opportune' for both observing and photographing trains in conjun with getting an education...
