INTRODUCTION
This book contains the history of the Chicago & North Western Railroad from Milwaukee to Fond du Lac. The line is only 62 miles long, compared to most subdivisions that are 85 miles to more than 100 miles in length. Certainly, the double track 85-mile line from Milwaukee to Chicago leading into a large 16-track terminal might be more interesting to some, but not to me.
I found the Air Line, with its small towns and villages, rural landscape, and a variety of industry, to be more fascinating. Quite a few of my co-workers felt the same way. The more I worked on this line, the more information I accumulated through the years. My first attempt at recording and sharing this history began with a web site constructed by my son, Jim. As people discovered the web site, they sent information and photos to me that were added to the site.
