DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
This all-color journey on the Burlington covers]. the 429 miles of "Lines East" running between Chicago and the Twin Cities. The major emphasis of Volume 2 is on the late 1950s and the 1960s and focuses on passenger and freight operations over the Chicago & Aurora and La Crosse Divisions. This is the time frame when the Q began acquiring second generation diesels from its traditional supplier, Electro-Motive Division as well as from General Electric. All of these new higher horsepower locomotives came, not in the traditional black and gray paint scheme utilized since the 1940s, but in a new brilliant Chinese red and gray scheme introduced in 1958.
CHICAGO, BURLINGTON & QUINCY Volume 2 includes coverage of Savanna and La Crosse, the two Division points between Chicago and St. Paul, as well as taking a photographic look at the run-through operations of the Burlington and th Great Northern, New York Central and Erie-Lackawanna on the line to the Twin Cities. Volume 2 also has some nostalgic coverage of some of the Burlington steam fan trips along the River line. So climb on board as we leave from Chicago for a 429 mile excursion to the Twin Cities. And once we reach Savanna, we will parallel the Mississippi River for the 300 miles to St. Paul, known by all as that portion of the Q where "Nature Smiles 300 Miles."
