One can contend (always arguably) that the Burlington actually the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was the most successful of the "Granger Roads". In viewing a "Burlington Route" system map, one will find that many of Burlington's main routes are still very important links in our nation's rail system: Chicago, IL-St. Paul, MN, Chicago-Denver, CO, Lincoln, NE-Billings, MT and others are quite busy. Traffic patterns have changed and many of its branch lines were abandoned or short-lined, but the overall outline of the Burlington remains. Was this outline part of an original business plan carried on with loyal dedication by management and labor? The answer is "No" and that requires a short and vastly incomplete discussion of the history and formation of the Burlington.
