Two happenings eventful for the Chicago and North Western took place during that year. One was the granting by the Illinois legislature, on January 10, of a charter to the Chicago and Galena Union Railroad, authorizing the building of a railroad out into the praiiie towardsif not tothe Mississippi River near the lead mines near Galena, Illinois and Dubuque, Iowa.
