INTRODUCTION
It was the original intention of this author to assemble a book on both the rolling stock and motive power of the Chicago and North Western Railway System. It was soon determined that such a project would fill not one volume but several if it was to be done with any degree of completeness. Therefore after consultation with the publishers, it was decided that a pictorial review of the motive power should be the objective. Research and investigation of records that were available revealed that an all time roster of steam power was impossible to assemble. However there was a sufficient amount of information for a representative roster of modern steam power since 1900 and for all of the diesel power, gas-electrics and Rail Diesel Cars operated by the C & NW System. Thus the final decision was to construct a pictorial review of the modern steam and diesel power of the Chicago & North Western Railway from 1900 to 1971, and to include with that a capsul history of the railroad and a portfolio of C & NW trains in action. The "Line Up" of the book is as follows:
Chapter 1 is a capsul history of the railroad starting with the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad in 1848 through to 1971.
Chapter 2 is a portfolio of photographs of the C & NW in "ACTION". The photos cover steam power as well as diesel power including the famous "400" streamliner fleet.
Chapter 3 includes a representative steam locomotive roster, diagrams and photos of all major locomotive types. Efforts to assemble an all time roster met with complete frustration. What records that are left in the files of the Company and various historical societies are so incomplete as to render complete historical accuracy impossible. In addition when one tries to cross check these records with Poor's Transportation volumes the number of locomotives never match up. Furthermore the C & NW often assigned a single letter class to more than one type of locomotive or one type of locomotive had more than one letter class. For example Class H covered two types (4-8-4's and 4-4-0's) and the 4-4-0 was covered by more than 15 letter classifications from A to Z. And this isn't all that adds to the confusion. The numbering system right up until the time of the diesel was pure chaos. Except for a few locomotives purchased after 1925, the numbering system for the various types literally "jumped" all over the place. Therefore we had to settle for a "Representative Roster" of steam power instead of an all time roster.
Chapter 4 includes a roster of all diesel power owned and operated by the Chicago & North Western and the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroads. In addition, the diesel power owned and operated by the Minneapolis and St. Louis and Chicago Great Western Railroads at the time of their inclusion into the C & NW System is also presented. This chapter consists of individual rosters of locomotive types as well as a summary by number, locomotive diagrams and photos.
Chapter 5 covers all of the Gas-Electric Cars and Rail Diesel Cars that the C & NW and Omaha Railroads operated over the system lines.
