The Chicago & North Western railroad was by 1954 a railroad only railfans could love. Certainly stockholders and on-line customers must have hated the road. Snorting herds of steam locomotives still roamed the system. Passenger service was generous. In five years, management had succeeded in trimming only 125 branch line miles from the sprawling system. Yes, the North Western was picturesque as all get-out.
But the road was hemorrhaging money. Under the vague and vacillating administration of Paul E. Feucht, profits had been sliding steadily for four years, and by the end of 1954, they would crash through the bottom line to a $4.6 million loss.
Moreover, longtime partners in the City streamliners, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, were losing patience. Increasingly, North Western was delivering the trains late. Cars were not being kept up. In 1955, SP President Donald J. Russell rode one of the streamliners to Chicago. He was not pleased. Track work was ragged, and the train was, as usual, late. In October, UP and SP took the streamliners away from C&NW and handed them to archrival Milwaukee Road.
It was a blow to North Western's pride and prestige but a boon to the pocketbook. Clearly, the road was in trouble. The stockholders were looking for Feucht's replacement, when their attention settled on a Chicago lawyer named Ben Walter Heineman. Feucht took the wisest course: He staged a "heart attack" and disappeared into a Chicago hospital.
