When the Chicago and North Western was swallowed up by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1995, a long tradition ended. The North Western was the last of the granger railroads to operate under its own colors. Rock Island was long gone, torn up or parceled out among a few larger roads. Milwaukee Road had vanished into Soo Line, which was similarly disappearing into Canadian Pacific. Illinois Central spun off their Iowa trackage to Chicago & Central Pacific. North Western itself had absorbed the Omaha Road, the Minneapolis & St. Louis, and the Chicago Great Western. Who is left? The Burlington, but that road is scarcely a granger these days. Fused with Santa Fe, the old Q has been transformed into that strange monster that stalks the 1990s railroad landscape, a mega-railroad.
