In August 1972 The Chessie System, a railroad with a fresh new dynamic image burst on the scene in the eastern United States. Its daring crisp pop art paint scheme garnered instant attention from shippers, the railroad press, rail enthusiasts and the general public. Bright yellow and blue locomotives striped with orange! Yellow, blue and black freight cars each with a contrasting colored stylized Cat logo. No railroad had ever displayed this type of daring paint scheme before. It stated loudly and clearly that this was a railroad with both panache and pride. It had success written all over it.
